Titanium Facts - Aesthetically titanium is very pleasing as well as being durable, lightweight and less costly than precious metals such as gold or platinum. When titanium is oxidised it provides a beautiful rainbow of colours which lends itself well to the making of modern designer pieces of jewellery.

Titanium Grading

Titanium 6.4 is Aircraft Grade and is composed of 90% titanium, 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium. High quality jewellery is usually made from this grade, it has a tensile strength of up to 150000 psi and a Brinell hardness value of 330.

It is possible to get even harder titanium known as 6.6.2 which has a strength value of 180000 psi and a Brinell value of 389. This grade is composed of 86% titanium, 6% aluminum, 6% vanadium, 2% tin and is probably the strongest grade available. This grade of titanium is used mainly in the aerospace industry.

Even in it's natural form, titanium is one of the strongest natural metals as well as being one of the lightest and most hypoallergenic. Whilst being commonly used in the manufacture of surgical instruments and prosthetics, titanium is now being used more commonly in the manufacture of jewellery.
